Fleet Week San Diego, Coronado Speed Fest Coming!

The San Diego Fleet Week Foundation is a nonprofit, public benefit corporation. In addition to honoring the military services through the annual Fleet Week events, the Foundation’s goals are to foster awareness of the contributions made by enlisted military personnel and their families, to enhance relationships between the civilian, business and military communities, to provide events that Military personnel and their families can attend at little or no cost, and to raise funds for charitable efforts benefiting enlisted service members and their families.

“We are privileged to have Jerry Sanders serve as our honorary chairperson,” says Brian Sack, Executive Director, San Diego Fleet Week Foundation.  “His lifetime of service and deep-rooted civic engagement in America’s Finest City make him an ideal person to champion Fleet Week San Diego’s mission of honoring those who serve in our Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.”
Sanders began his lifelong career in public service when he joined the San Diego Police Department at the age of 22, ultimately becoming one of the youngest police chiefs in the city’s history. After retiring from the police force, he held positions as CEO of the United Way of San Diego and chaired the board of the local chapter of the American Red Cross. In 2005, Sanders won his first of two terms as San Diego’s mayor, leading the city until December of 2012.
“It is my honor to serve as honorary chair of Fleet Week San Diego,” said Sanders.  “The support of our sponsors and the San Diego community visibly demonstrates our respect for the military in our region.  We look forward to celebrating the military and their families during Fleet Week events.”
A well-known coalition builder, Jerry Sanders has been a leader who through example has provided inspiration to others, throughout San Diego and the nation.
August 22, 2014 (SAN DIEGO, CA) – Heads-up craft beer lovers: Coronado Brewing Company has created a beer just for the San Diego Fleet Week Foundation called San Diego Fleet Week Pale Ale.  The brew’s coming out party is Tuesday, August 26 from 5:30 – 8:00 pm at Coronado Brewing Company’s tasting room located at 1205 Knoxville St., San Diego.  Sales proceeds will go directly to Fleet Week to help put on the many events the foundation hosts to thank and honor our military.
“We’re so excited to partner with Coronado Brewing Company on this,” says Brian Sack, Executive Director of Fleet Week San Diego.  “They have been a long-time supporter and have now gone over and above to help us achieve our mission of recognizing the immense and valuable contributions of the military to our region.”
The Debut Party is free and open to the public. Active duty military will be treated to free food courtesy of Cali Comfort BBQ of Spring Valley who will provide their signature “low-and-slow” menu cooked in their Ole Hickory Smoker.  Food trucks will be on-site selling food to the general public.

SPEED Energy Formula Off-Road Presented by TRAXXAS features identically prepared high-horsepower trucks made to resemble their scaled-down Traxxas radio-control-car counterparts. Like their Traxxas namesake the trucks are designed to take flight. However, unlike RC trucks, they produce 600 horsepower generating speeds upwards of 130 miles per hour.
The versatile off-road trucks race on virtually any surface and can often be found IndyCar venues, X Games Austin and other large events, such as the Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival. Click here to learn more.

The Coronado Speed Festival is part of San Diego’s annual Fleet Week, an event organized to pay tribute to our nation’s military and to help increase exposure to the military community in San Diego.
As part of the festival, more than 25,000 racecar fans, active duty military, veterans, and visitors from all over will line a 1.7-mile course at Naval Air Station North Island to watch nine different groups race at high speeds, visit with celebrity drivers, and enjoy vendors and activities during the two day festival.
Other highlights of the festival include a military pit crew challenge—a competition among military commands and active duty military; Navy ship tours and military displays including Navy jets and helicopters, vintage aircraft, and access to pilots for questions and demonstrations; and much more.
There is no other event in Southern California like the Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival. A full schedule of events, including opening ceremony information, can be found here. As this year’s Fleet Week San Diego honorary chair, Jerry Sanders—president of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and former San Diego mayor—will preside over many Speed Festival activities.
The event is free to active duty military and their dependents. The general public is invited onto the base for a weekend of racing, making it the only open house offered by the Navy on the West Coast.
