Since I have a scientific mind, it occurs that the explanation for describing earthquake types

can be accomplished in either a "global" sense or a "linear" sense (Venus v Mars)

This is the simplest way to explain the differences in oscillatory and trepidatory earthquakes.

For the scientific community - 

And for the simpler minded - 

This is a trepidatory earthquake type movement

This is oscillatory earthquake type movement

And this is a combination of both types.

I bet you will never think of earthquakes in quite the same way again!
