Chrysler Thunderbolt

The Chrysler Thunderbolt introduced a new wave of designs and industry technological accomplishments.  The body was comprised of aluminum and the roof was a retractable, electronically controlled hardtop.  There were no door handles, rather a push button.  The windows were hydraulically actuated and the headlights were concealed.  The aerodynamic design continued to the fully enclosed wheel wells.  There no A pillars.


Alex Tremulis designed this vehicle based on the Chrysler Crown Imperial, as well as being credited with the design of the the Tucker.


The retractable top was so revolutionary that it wasn't until 1957 that the Ford Skyliner had a similar feature.


Four out the original six manufactured are still in existence with one located in the Chrysler Museum at Auburn, Michigan.
